Australian deserts are vast in size, some taking up to 14 days to cross. Fuel and water are not readily available in remote areas. RFDS (Royal Flying Doctor Service) radios can be hired cheaply. Winter months are generally safer, however sudden rain can cause flash flooding. Most swollen fast-flowing rivers and creeks in outback regions rise and fall rapidly, so be patient.
Police and local rangers must be informed prior to venturing out away from towns.
